There are rules for combat, spellcasting, dungeon exploration (light sources, rests, doors, traps, etc.), and wilderness exploration; also aerial and naval combat, stronghold-building and whatnot. To me D&D has always been sandbox-ish, players do what they want.<br /><br />The first D&D game my friends and I played on our own (as opposed to being run by one of our friend's older brother in college) was with Holmes D&D.
